News - Sarikei-Sibu Durin Bridge opened

Sibu - sizing up the Rejang River (Source: Google Earth)

I
t's no easy feat to build a bridge over the mighty Rejang River. Sibu has done it a second time with the 1.194km single-carriageway Durin Bridge which opened on 21 Oct 2006 for the commuters rushing home for Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations. This is the last missing link on the 963km-long Kuching-Miri Pan Borneo Highway.

The first Sibu bridge over Rejang River was the 1.220km Lanang Bridge which opened on 24 April 2006. The RM$180M Lanang Bridge is 6km from Sibu downtown whereas Durin Bridge is 49km from downtown and leads to the Sibu airport. This is a significant development for Sarikei as a many of us use Sibu's airport.

The government appointed the 1st consortium to build the bridge at a cost of RM95.8M and construction started in Mar 1999. The contractor did not complete the bridge within the stipulated time period of 34 months and was given six extensions (total 18 months). A new contractor started work on the bridge in May 2004 and was given 18 months to complete it costing RM26.4M.

More good news? Durin Bridge was funded by the federal government and it's toll free unlike the toll based (privatised) Lanang Bridge. No need to cry me a river this time.

Matt,
Wow, how did you find this blog?

Fred,
That's good news on the good roads! I guess less Sarikei people will fly via Kuching now. Sibu airport it will be!
