First there was Ngiu Kee Department Store in the 1990s. Now there's 南隆 Nam Leong Department Store. For the Sarikei-knowledge challenged folks, this is the new store further up from KFC towards the kampung at Jalan Masjid Lama. I think this is Foochow owned.

The store utilizes 8 units of 3-storey shops to create Nam Leong on 25 Oct 2008. The opening created a stir in this small town and just about every one wanted to experience it. The ground floor has the usual supermarket with groceries, cold storage and fruits and vegetables. There was even a lucky draw and its galore of prizes displayed.

The first floor is more impressive with branded cosmestic like L'oreal and a luggage section. You would have thought that this is some store in West Malaysia. There are uniformed service staff on every floor.

Hang on, there's more. There are an electrical appliances section, a men's and a ladies' sections with mannequins. The ladies section is much bigger (a given fact of life) with things like shoes, handbags and undergarments.

At the corner of my eye, I thought I saw a lady in her bikini but it turned out to be an ang moh mannequin dressed in auspicious red undergarments for Chinese New Year! Sorry, "ang pow not enough" to buy this ang teh ko (red underwear).

The second floor has a bed linen section and a kid's section. Some of us still use the patched rags type of blanket done by grandma but here we are talking about design and thread count of bed sets. Do you dig this jargon? Obviously this store has done its homework on where to position what products on which floor depending on the type and frequency of the target human traffic.

Excuse me, how much is that chandelier?

I was there during the CNY break. To be frank, I'm very impressed. I mean the settings, deco, branded items, caterization of products, it carry a sense of "high class" back in Sarikei. The down part is, outlook of the building looks pretty much like those mini-market out there.
