Two-storeyed main block

St Anne's Primary School has grown significantly since its humble roots in 1967 as St Anthony's Primary School. Now every primary level has 4 classes from Primary 1A-D to Primary 6A-D. The main block has been extended twice in 1974 and 1978 and it has become awkwardly long. The small kids of primary 1 & 2 have the benefit of the ground floor classes. Can you recall wanting to grow up faster so that you could be in the classes up the stairs? The office and dentist rooms are also on the ground floor. Primary 3 and 4 are on level 2.

The back is next to Lian Soon Road.

In the 1970s, there was no fence and there's a short cut through the bush for those living in Lian Soon Road and Tai Ping Road. Actually, in the early 1970s, there was only muddy Tai Ping Road.

Sneak peek inside Primary 1

The first class at the end of the main block (next to the stairs) was the only Primary 1 class in the 1970s for those that came mainly from St Clement's kindergarten. For Primary 1 and 2, there were rows of very low benches at the front of the class for reading lessons. There was a popular table tennis table next to the stairs. A palm tree (areca nut palm tree?) was next to the end of the main block.

Sorry, the school bell had just rung. I had to go back to my Primary 1 classroom. Shhhh! the teacher's coming. Loud chorus - "Good morning, Mrs Hii (Ing King)."

(Note: She was formerly Monica Ting.)

I used to live at the back of St Anne School - Tai Ping Road. So it was very easy for me to come to school as well as going back. On most occasions, I would come in the afternoon to watch some "Champion" play Ping Pong. Loser give way. It was a challenge to be winner all the time. But it's exciting and competitive! In the 70's the back of St Anne is a forest. During my trip back in 2007 all these refreshing greenery has transformed into concrete jungle!

Sister Adriana is now Mother Superior in Kuching and recebtly had heart problems.

Sister Catherine from St Clement's kindergarten passed away some years ago.
