News: Intrepid Travel brings ecotourists to Sarikei - Off the Beaten Track

Intrepid homepage

Intrepid Travel is a famous travel planner that excels in adventure travel for small groups. This phrase of theirs sums it all, "Come with us to discover real people, real cultures & incredible real life experiences along the way."

Their tours are in a market segment totally different from the Pandaw luxury cruises.

Mid last year I received this email from Intrepid who was in the midst of refreshing their 2011 tours.

Hi Daniel

I have come across this longhouse and eventually your name.  I am looking to try and make contact with the Rumah Nyuka Longhouse with possibility of operating a trip that I am wanting to bring through Sarikei and have found it nearly impossible to get any contact details.  Would it be possible for you to send me the phone number of someone there so I could call.  I have a number of people who work for me who are from Borneo and could get one of those to speak to them if the language barrier is a problem.

Hopefully I will hear from you soon

Thanks in advance

I replied him with the Sarawak Tourism Board contacts in Sibu and also linked him with the longhouse facebook group creator. I didn't follow up on the status until recently. It's indeed exciting news that Sarikei has been selected as the longhouse stay for four of their tours in 2011: Absolute Borneo, Best of Borneo, Borneo Adventure and Wild Sarawak. The ecotourists will spend one memorable night at the Rumah Nyuka longhouse in Bayong, Ulu Sarikei.

The tours are rated as follows on the "physical" scale:
"Be prepared for some serious physical activity. The majority of activities included on this trip will be challenging. The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy your holiday."

and as follows on the "culture shock" scale:
"The comforts of home are more of a rarity. English is not common and the food will be quite different to what you are used to. It is important to observe some of the local customs to not cause offence. Many of the locals' standard of living may be confronting."

What was the tourists' feedback so far on these tours? The average scores for the overall tours have consistently been above 4.5 out of 5.  Intrepid sent this email on the Sarikei leg.

Hi guys, our first impressions is that it is looking quite good and I am very impressed with their attitude towards responsible tourism, something that myself and my employer Intrepid Travel take very seriously.  Thanks for taking the time to try and help me with this and hopefully we may all be able to raise the profile of an amazing part of the world.

Just found out that this is the 500th blog post. There's some more to come. Enjoy the rest of the journey.

It's surprising that a blog on Sarikei can have enough content to last a few years.
