If you can not change a bookworm into a gym rat, at least you can transform the former library into the public gym. The public gym was formerly at the Civic Centre in the 1990s before moving to level 2 of the Lorong Layang Layang building (behind Shell station) in early 2010.

It does not cost a bomb to be fit and to look good. You pay a registration fee of MYR10 and then you pay by daily entry (MYR1) or by monthly (MYR10) for unlimited entries. Operating hours are Monday to Friday (4.30 pm to 8.30pm) and  Saturday (3.00pm to 8.00pm)

There's no shower facilities so wear your gym gear (not your Sunday best) and bring your own sweat towels before you embark on your fitness routine. After you have got over the garish dose of colours on the walls, decide what exercise suits you best.

Shall it be aerobics exercises to build up your stamina and keep your heart fit? If so, head over to the modern treadmills and stationary bicycles to lose the calories gained from your kam pua and kom pia.

If you are into meditation and stretching, exercise balls and yoga mats are provided. You may want to bring your own yoga mats for hygiene purposes. The benefit of exercising with an exercise ball is that the body responds to the instability of the ball to remain balanced and thus engaging more muscles.

If you are into anaerobic for building muscles and mass, warm up and learn how to breathe properly from the trainers. If you prefer the universal station, share the weights with others. Remember to release the weights slowly so as not to shock your neighbours with a bang.

Ladies can use the station by adjusting the weights with the support pin. You will lose calories faster by building up some non visible muscles because muscles burn calories faster than fat when you are idle. Your metabolism rate becomes higher.

If you are nuts about standalone free weights, fret not, your wish is granted. Dumb bells of pre set weights are nicely arranged on its shelf. Ladies can choose the smaller weights. The advantage of free weights is that you can control the range of movements better and you don't have to wait at the universal station during peak hours.

Do not let the big boys intimidate you with their bulky frames initially because they were once puny too. It's through consistent workouts and proper protein supplements that they built bulk. You will see the regulars there because their "athlete's high" keep them coming back or else they may have withdrawal symptoms.

You can take the book out of the book worm but you can not take the rat out of the gym. Now let's get physical and change that 1-pack belly into a 6-pack washboard.
